Our hard earned tax dollars are stolen every year by New Orleans' Tourism Commission Board. The board takes millions of our tax dollars and instead of putting it into the city budget, put it towards generating more tourism. This means more money for business owners and less money for the 88,000 hospitality workers and our community.
This money should be going towards higher wages, affordable childcare, better public transit, better parking, and healthcare.
Laura, 43, is a career hospitality worker who was admitted to UMC hospital in March 2018 with a critical heart infection. It's unclear if she will survive. Her doctors say that if she had better access to treatment the infection would have been addressed earlier. Currently she is undergoing care out of state. She came to NOHWC because she wanted to find a way to give back to New Orleans.
We say: It's time the hotel and restaurant owners give back to New Orleans. We demand a full-service free health clinic for all hospitality workers, paid for by the New Orleans hotel occupancy tax.
WHERE & WHEN: Join us for the demonstration at 3pm on the 2nd floor of Manning's and then for the press conference at 3:30pm.
